Danielle Kurin

Danielle Kurin - Santa Barbara-Based Professor and Researcher

As a resident of Santa Barbara, California, Danielle Kurin, PhD, teaches anthropology to graduate and undergraduates at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) from 2013-2022. In addition to her appointment as an assistant professor, and then tenured associate professor, Dr. Danielle Kurin is the founding director of the Walker Bioarchaeology and Forensic Bone Lab.

Prior to her positions with UCSB, Dr. Kurin taught and did research at universities in the US and in Latin America. In 2005, she was a teaching assistant at the forensic anthropology department at Bryn Mawr College. From 2005 to 2008 and 2010 to 2011 she was a teaching associate with the anthropology department at Vanderbilt University.

In 2011, Dr. Kurin received an assistant professor appointment at the Universidad Nacional Jose Maria Arguedas in Apurimac, Peru. She became a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University Tecnologica de los Andes, also in Apurimac, in 2009. From 2009 to 2013 she served as the founding director of the Andahuaylas Museum Peru, and she continues to provide oversight of the institution.

Dr. Kurin’s expertise is in Andean civilizations, especially those existing in Peru. As director of the lab, she assists students with learning how to properly analyze human bones and tissues. She has written extensively on this topic, and her research and review work has been accepted in the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology, International Journal of Osteoarchaeology, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, and Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory, among others.
